OpenAI GPT-5.2-Codex Supercharges Agentic Coding and Vulnerability Detection

On Friday, OpenAI released GPT-5.2-Codex, the most advanced agentic coding model to date, designed specifically for complex real-world software engineering.

GPT-5.2-Codex is an upgraded version of GPT-5.2, with improved instruction-following capabilities and understanding of long-range context. It has been further optimized for agentic coding in Codex, including improvements to long-term work through context compression. GPT-5.2-Codex performs better in large code changes such as refactoring and migration, shows improved performance in Windows environments, and has significantly enhanced cybersecurity capabilities.

Compared to GPT-5.2, 5.2-Codex also demonstrates significant improvements in token efficiency for coding tasks, especially at medium and high reasoning levels. It is reported to have quickly become the daily workhorse tool for Codex team members.

The release of the new model has garnered widespread attention. In the developer community, people believe that if Claude Code excels at “raw code,” then Codex/GPT5.x is unmatched in carefully and systematically identifying “problems” (whether code issues or mathematical problems).

Although the new version of the GPT model requires longer runtime, its intelligence level is surprising. The new model finally possesses the spatial reasoning capabilities needed to drive excellent design.
