In July this year, Cognition officially announced the acquisition of Windsurf. Prior to this, OpenAI had attempted to acquire Windsurf for $3 billion, but negotiations fell through due to complications with their Microsoft partnership.
Subsequently, Google acquired the core team, including the CEO and co-founders, for $2.4 billion and obtained licensing rights to Windsurf technology.
Just as Windsurf was on the brink of collapse, Cognition stepped in to take over. The new Windsurf Wave 12 version represents a complete "Devin-ization" by the Cognition team after their takeover.
Major System Integration
This update directly integrates the core capabilities of Cognition's Devin - the world's strongest SWE Agent that dares to charge $2000 per month subscription - into the IDE, while simultaneously updating the interface, performance, AI functionality, and container support.
