On June 4th local time, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan posted that Anthropic had cut off their direct access to almost all Claude 3.x models (first-party capacity) with less than five days' notice, including Claude 3.5 Sonnet, 3.7 Sonnet, and 3.7 Sonnet Thinking.
Mohan reminded users that Claude 3.x models might temporarily experience some availability issues as they rapidly shift computing power to other inference service providers. "We were willing to pay for full access rights all along. We are deeply disappointed with Anthropic's decision and their hasty notification approach."
In response, Windsurf quickly shifted to other inference service providers, and other model services remain unaffected. Subsequently, Mohan also clarified that Windsurf has Claude 3.x model access through third-party providers, so paying users should not be significantly affected. However, due to the short notice period, it is currently insufficient to meet all existing Claude 3.x model demands.
To address this, Windsurf immediately implemented the following countermeasures:
To help users through this phase, Windsurf will launch a promotional price of 0.75x (original price was 1x) for the alternative model Gemini 2.5 Pro.
Remove direct access to Claude 3.x models for Free plan users (including Pro plan trial users). Meanwhile, Windsurf reopened access to these models through BYOK (Bring Your Own Key).
Claude Sonnet 4 remains accessible through BYOK.
