Agents always start from a blank slate. Architecture decisions you spent half a day explaining to the Agent last week are completely forgotten when you start a new session this week.
You have to re-explain the project background, re-state the conventions, and re-step through the same pitfalls you already overcame. The time cost remains high, and the Agent doesn’t get any smarter.
CLAUDE.md becomes useless once written. You carefully wrote a specification document at project kickoff, but three months later, the project has evolved, and no one updated the document, and the Agent continues generating code based on the outdated rules.
