Based on the latest White House budget documents for fiscal year 2026, major U.S. agencies are facing drastic cuts to research funding:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) budget will plummet by 56%.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget will be slashed by approximately 40%.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will face a 55% reduction.
Experts warn that these cuts will have a devastating impact on the U.S. scientific community.
Michael Lubell, a physicist at the City University of New York, stated: “This sends a message to young scientists: this country is not for you! If I were starting my career now, I would leave without hesitation.”
In fact, some scientists have already begun moving to Europe and China.
Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), said in a statement that if Congress passes this budget, it “will have catastrophic consequences for America’s future.”
Mathematician Terence Tao noted that while details remain unclear, the NSF may not only halt approvals for new grants but also stop funding for ongoing, previously approved projects.
“If so, this will cause enormous disruption (e.g., to mathematical institutes) and conflict with Congress’s authorization for NSF funding,” Tao questioned.
