Everyone, get mentally prepared—the big price hikes are coming sooner or later.
This was the most common reaction from readers in the comment sections when Anthropic kept rolling out new features while simultaneously tightening usage restrictions.
Among OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, Anthropic has the strictest usage limits. On top of that, they’ve now introduced identity verification, requiring real-name authentication to use the service. Then, in the early hours of today, they removed Claude Code access for Pro users ($20/month).
Anthropic’s Head of Growth responded, saying they are running a small-scale test on approximately 2% of new professional user sign-ups. Existing Pro and Max users are not affected. He also admitted that the current subscription plans cannot handle the massive token consumption from users, and the company is working on new paid options.
OpenAI immediately responded to the controversy over Claude Code being taken away from Pro members. Codex lead Rohan Varma directly took a jab at Claude Code in a very on-the-nose way—even copying the exact post format Claude Code uses.
While Anthropic is testing more expensive plans on just 2% of users, Codex is testing it with 100% of users, making Codex available to both free and paid plans. They even cheekily added: “Claude Code users are not affected.”
