Codex is a cloud-based software engineering intelligent agent capable of handling multiple tasks in parallel, including writing features, answering questions about codebases, fixing bugs, and submitting pull requests for review. Each task runs in its own dedicated cloud sandbox environment, preloaded with the codebase.
Codex is powered by the codex-1 model, a version of OpenAI’s o3 optimized specifically for software engineering.
Trained using reinforcement learning across various environments for real-world programming tasks, it generates code that closely mirrors human style and PR preferences, precisely follows instructions, and can iteratively run tests until achieving satisfactory results.
Starting today, ChatGPT Pro, Team, and Enterprise users can access Codex, with Plus and Edu users gaining access soon.
