OpenAI's Codex App Goes Free, Challenging Claude Code
OpenAI launches Codex app as a native agent command center for macOS, featuring parallel multi-agent workflows, customizable skills, and automation.
I’ve been a loyal terminal/Emacs user for many years, but ever since I started using the Codex app, going back to the terminal feels like stepping back into the past. This is truly a native development interface experience built specifically for Agents.
This is, of course, the rainbow fart (glowing praise) from OpenAI President Greg Brockman for the newly launched Codex App—whether it’s actually good or not, the users will have the final say.
People in the industry probably share a basic consensus: Codex has extremely strong coding capabilities, but its user experience has been pretty lackluster. For quite a while now, it’s been getting thoroughly outclassed by Claude Code. Finally, OpenAI’s counterattack has arrived—and they managed to release it just one day before the rumored launch of Claude Sonnet 5.
