In July 2024, OpenAI actively began recruiting former employees who were involved in producing Google's AI chips (TPU) and is seeking to develop its own AI server chips.
OpenAI plans to offer these recruited senior engineers millions of dollars worth of equity each year.
The company is moving forward with plans to develop its first-generation self-developed AI chips to reduce dependency on Nvidia and explore new channels for chip supply.
The first self-developed chip design is expected to be completed in the coming months, and plans are in place for TSMC to manufacture it. Both OpenAI and TSMC declined to comment on this matter.
Recent developments suggest that OpenAI is on track to begin mass production in 2026.
