OpenAI Finally "Compromises"
Recently, OpenAI’s tilt toward a for-profit model has drawn significant criticism, particularly from Elon Musk.
In February 2024, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in a California court, accusing the company of abandoning its original nonprofit mission to benefit humanity in favor of profit maximization.
Musk specifically highlighted OpenAI’s close partnership with Microsoft, condemning it as effectively becoming a closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, betraying its initial open-source commitments.
Under mounting pressure from Musk, former employees, AI ethics scholars, and regulators, OpenAI announced today that it is officially abandoning plans to fully transition into a for-profit entity.
In a public letter, OpenAI’s board and founder, Sam Altman, provided an institutional response: the company’s for-profit operations will transition into a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), with its mission unchanged, continuing to be controlled by the nonprofit organization but with a clearer governance framework.
