Sora API Leak Sparks Controversy: Artists Speak Out Against OpenAI

Waking up to surprising news—Sora API has leaked.

The Breakdown:

  • Bad News: Access was revoked by OpenAI three hours later.

  • Good News: Users managed to conduct tests within those three hours.

Nine hours ago, a tweet by X user @legit_rumors ignited the AI community: OpenAI’s Sora API has been leaked.

The leak exposed API access only, which was originally intended for testing by artists selected by OpenAI. According to the whistleblower’s open letter, these artists felt exploited, calling themselves "PR Puppets" used for marketing purposes.

In retaliation, the "PR Puppets" deployed a simple frontend on Hugging Face, allowing anyone to generate 10-second videos with up to 1080p resolution using just a text prompt.

What Was Leaked

The leaked API reportedly included a faster version called Sora Turbo. However, the larger version was not leaked. As previously reported by The Information, request logs revealed multiple models (e.g., "turbo"), different "styles" (the Hugging Face demo used "natural"), and operational modes (e.g., "simple combination" and "project repair"). API requests allowed users to tweak video variants and frame counts.
