After clearing out NVIDIA, SoftBank’s $40 billion financing for OpenAI has been fully deposited.
According to Nikkei Asia on December 31, SoftBank has completed its promised $22.5 billion additional investment in OpenAI, bringing its stake to approximately 11%. The transaction was completed last week, U.S. time, raising SoftBank’s total funding provided to OpenAI to $34.7 billion.
SoftBank’s investment in OpenAI began in February this year. SoftBank plans to invest $40 billion in OpenAI at a valuation of $260 billion over the next 12-24 months, through a combination of direct investment and co-investment with joint investors. Part of the funds will be used to support “Stargate,” an AI infrastructure project jointly invested in by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank.
This also means that SoftBank’s $40 billion investment in OpenAI has been fully deposited.
It’s worth noting that the core prerequisite for this funding to be fully in place was that OpenAI complete its restructuring and convert to a for-profit organization by year-end; otherwise, it would be reduced to just tens of billions of dollars.
