A tweet from Sam Altman sparked a wave of discussion online.
Without any prior notice, Altman personally revealed OpenAI's product roadmap and admitted that some of the company's recently released products have been somewhat chaotic.
The tweet revealed that OpenAI's next step is the release of GPT-4.5, which will be its last non-chain-of-thought (CoT) model. Its internal codename is Orion, though Altman did not explain what new features GPT-4.5 will have.
In the coming months, OpenAI will release a model called GPT-5, which will incorporate a significant amount of OpenAI's technologies into ChatGPT and the API, including o3.
Due to this roadmap decision, OpenAI will no longer plan to release o3 as a standalone model, and o3 will be part of GPT-5.
GPT-4.5 is essentially what was previously thought to be GPT-5, and GPT-5 will be a combination of GPT-4.5 and o3.
