Do you remember “Clippy,” the big-eyed paperclip that used to pop up in the bottom right corner of your Word documents over 20 years ago? Whether you were writing a thesis or a love letter, it would always interrupt you with its iconic, uneven eyebrows.

It was a product very much of its era, launched as a Microsoft Office assistant in the late 1990s. After being widely criticized for being annoying, it “retired” with Office XP in 2001.

But Microsoft never stopped trying in the assistant space—think of the once lukewarm Cortana. Now, the AI era has given Microsoft the perfect opportunity to “revive” it.

Yesterday at the Copilot Fall Event, Microsoft officially introduced Mico—a brand new Copilot virtual character, considered the AI-era version of Clippy.

This is not just a major makeover for Copilot, but also seems to signal that Microsoft continues to bet we need an AI companion, hoping AI becomes a social experience.
