Amazon just launched Kiro.dev. An AI IDE for Spec-Driven Development (It's amazing!) : r/programming

What problems still exist with AI programming currently?

I believe there are three key issues:

1. Lack of project-wide perspective AI doesn't understand your project's overall architecture, business goals, and design specifications. It can write a function, but doesn't know where that function fits or what role it plays in the entire system.

2. Need for repeated reminders. You must repeat the project's technical requirements and coding standards every time you ask a question. "Please use TypeScript," "Remember to handle exceptions," "Our API style is RESTful"...

3. Inconsistent style AI-generated code may be functionally correct, but doesn't align with existing project code in terms of naming, formatting, error handling, etc. This inconsistent code increases project entropy, and once the project grows large, it becomes difficult to maintain and evolves into a mess.

So, despite all the excitement around AI programming with daily iterations and constant updates, it still plays the role of an intern. It can complete specific tasks you assign, but it cannot understand the "why" and "how it should be done" behind those tasks.

The KIRO Agent Steering introduced today is designed to fundamentally solve this core pain point. Its goal is to transform AI from an "obedient tool" into a "partner that understands you."
