GPT-5.6 has arrived without warning.
On Friday, OpenAI released a limited preview of this new series, featuring three models with distinct positioning: the flagship Sol, Terra for high-frequency daily work, and the value-oriented Luna.
OpenAI stated that the series excels particularly in programming, cybersecurity, and biology, while also demonstrating greater stability in long-chain agentic tasks that require sustained focus.
This release came less than 24 hours after the U.S. government’s intervention in AI regulation sparked widespread discussion. The complex backdrop makes this launch far more than a routine technical iteration.
These three models cover different levels of needs.
In terms of capability positioning, Sol is the strongest overall among the three, with the deepest reasoning abilities, and introduces two new enhanced modes:
The “max” mode for complex tasks allows the model to spend more time on deep reasoning.
The “ultra” mode coordinates multiple sub-agents to collaborate, tackling complex tasks that exceed the limits of a single agent.
