OpenAI unveils GPT-5.5, claims a "new class of intelligence" at double the API price

It’s really here—this is OpenAI’s true trump card.

On Friday, OpenAI officially released its latest large model: GPT-5.5.

As a major upgrade in the GPT series, this release goes far beyond simply making the model “a bit smarter.” It feels like the first real taste of AGI. The new model brings significantly stronger reasoning (smarter answers that are also more concise), far more powerful and stable coding capabilities, superior knowledge integration, enhanced tool-use abilities, and much better performance on long, complex tasks.

GPT-5.5 leads Claude Opus 4.7 by a clear margin on most major benchmarks, while using roughly half the tokens of competitors at the same intelligence level.

Sounds too good to be true? Noam Brown, a world-class AI researcher at OpenAI and author of the famous AI poker bot, said that people can now use GPT-5.5 to accomplish many previously unimaginable tasks—including writing CUDA kernels.

An NVIDIA engineer with early access even said: “Losing access to GPT-5.5 feels like having a limb amputated.”

On social networks, users are already saying that collaborating with GPT-5.5 inside Codex is incredibly enjoyable. Its responses are sharp, it understands intent better than any previous model, and it can churn through massive amounts of work without stopping. Overall, it has upgraded Codex from a mere code tool into a true intelligent agent that gets things done.
