OpenAI has officially released GPT-5.5 Instant, making it the default model for ChatGPT, replacing the previous GPT-5.3 Instant. It is now available to all users.
The Instant series serves as ChatGPT’s primary everyday model, with hundreds of millions of users interacting with it daily. According to OpenAI, even small improvements at this scale produce substantial cumulative benefits. This version focuses on three key areas: greater accuracy, greater conciseness, and better understanding of the user.
Compared to the previous version, the new model delivers noticeable improvements in accuracy, response style, and personalization while maintaining low latency.
The gains in accuracy are especially prominent in high-stakes domains. Internal testing shows that GPT-5.5 Instant reduced its hallucination rate on medical, legal, and financial questions by 52.5% compared to the prior version. Error rates on user-flagged incorrect conversations also dropped by 37.3%.
Beyond text Q&A, the model shows enhancements in image and photo analysis, quality of answers to science and math problems, and better judgment on when to proactively call search tools.
