Recently, Google and Apple issued a joint statement announcing a multi-year deep collaboration on AI services—Apple will rely on Google’s Gemini and cloud technology to build its foundational models. The two giants, once rivals in the operating system wars, are unexpectedly converging in the AI era.
According to a statement obtained by CNBC from Apple: “After careful evaluation, we believe Google’s technology provides the strongest foundation for Apple’s foundational models, and we are excited that it will bring innovative new experiences to our users.”
As soon as the news broke, Elon Musk jumped on social platform X to comment bluntly: “Considering Google also owns Android and the Chrome browser, this concentration of power seems somewhat unreasonable.”
Reactions from netizens to this “century partnership” are divided. Some users believe “(the collaboration) is the right move,” yet still pose sharp questions: “If they’re just fine-tuning the Gemini model, can it still be called an Apple foundational model?” Others directly pointed out: “This is a beautiful counterpunch to those who used to boast that iOS is better than Android.”
Given that Apple had already partnered with OpenAI earlier, some netizens speculate the main reason for collaborating with Google might be “realizing that OpenAI’s upcoming consumer-grade AI device will compete directly with the iPhone.”
