On October 22, 2026, Google(GOOG 0.00%↑) announced an expanded partnership with energy technology company Voltus to build a virtual power plant of roughly 1 GW in the U.S. PJM grid region.
What makes this deal notable is that Google is not simply buying more electricity. It is paying to aggregate flexible electricity use from homes and businesses, so that those users consume a bit less when the grid is under the most strain, freeing up more available capacity.
Why is Google paying others to use less power while AI data centers are short of electricity?
The problem is no longer just how much power the U.S. is short of, but whether the grid can supply enough capacity at the moment data centers need it.
This matters to U.S. stock investors. AI power investment opportunities may go beyond nuclear, natural gas, and generation equipment, and also include energy storage, grid management, and companies that improve the utilization efficiency of the existing grid.
