When OpenAI and DeepSeek were fiercely competing, Google DeepMind’s math reasoning model quietly stunned everyone.

In its latest paper, Google DeepMind introduced the all-new evolved AlphaGeometry 2, a system that has already surpassed the average performance of IMO gold medalists in solving Olympic geometry problems.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is a prestigious global mathematics competition for high school students.

IMO problems are renowned for their difficulty, requiring a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and the creative application of these concepts.

Geometry is one of the four major categories in the IMO, with these categories being highly unified and particularly well-suited for fundamental reasoning research. As a result, this competition has become an ideal benchmark for measuring the advanced mathematical reasoning abilities of artificial intelligence systems.

In July 2024, Google DeepMind introduced AlphaGeometry (AG1), a neuro-symbolic system that achieved a 54% problem-solving rate on IMO geometry problems from 2000 to 2024—just one step away from gold medal performance.

AG1 combines a language model (LM) with a symbolic engine to effectively tackle these challenging problems, heralding an “AlphaGo moment” in the field of mathematics.
