People who use Claude Code or Codex every day are no strangers to the word “Harness.” Flip through almost any article related to Agents, and you’ll see it.
We all know this refers to the engineering practices that enable an Agent to complete tasks accurately. This set of practices can be called the Agent Harness.
For those of us who don’t develop intelligent agents and simply use Agents heavily in daily work, there’s no need to dive into that development knowledge.
That said, even without mastering how to build a Harness, if you want to use Agents more effectively, you still need to build a harness of your own—that’s the User Harness.
Simply put, the User Harness is the external engineering system built around the Agent, with the goal of helping us better control and steer it.
The philosophy of handling dynamic workflows in Claude Code is a harness for every task.
