AI programmers are evolving en masse!

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke posted four consecutive tweets today, announcing that Copilot has been officially upgraded into a self-directed AI engineer.

This update completely blew my mind: Is this meant to replicate Devin’s superpowers?

They rolled out all the awesome features that Cursor boasts in one fell swoop, such as proxy mode and next-edit-point prediction. There’s also something on the horizon: an updated generation of agents. At this point, it looks like Cursor is about to face a colossal counterattack from the behemoth Microsoft.

In other words, just like Cursor and Windsurf, Microsoft’s Copilot now also features Agent mode.

When you assign it a task—such as fixing a bug or developing a new module—you no longer need to explicitly detail the related code; it will automatically search through your codebase and locate the appropriate segments to handle the issue, as if you had an engineer standing by at your side.

Simply download the VSCode Insiders version, and you can directly enable Agent mode in the Chat settings.

It is anticipated that VSCode, in order to help GitHub Copilot compete with Cursor, has also tweaked some of the editor’s mechanisms and modes.
