Last week, a reader DMed me with a very typical question:

“Claude Code now has CLAUDE.md, Skills, Hooks, MCP, Subagents, Plugins… which one should I learn first?”

Honestly, I relate to this a lot. When I first started, I also had “configuration anxiety”—whatever was trending, I stuffed it into the project. CLAUDE.md ballooned past 500 lines, I created a dozen Skills in one go, tokens burned like crazy, and Claude became less obedient.

Later I dug through the official docs and found they actually have a page specifically for this problem: Extend Claude Code. That page doesn’t introduce any new features. Instead, it maps every extension into a “selection map”—what symptom, what medicine. Look it up and you get an exact match.

Today I’m breaking that page down for you. From now on, you don’t need to memorize every feature. When a problem shows up, just match it to the right slot.
