Last night, the tech world just staged a big open-source AI group gathering.
NVIDIA founder Jensen Huang posted an open letter on social media, bringing together tech giants and institutions like Meta and Microsoft to cheer on open-source models. But sharp-eyed netizens quickly noticed that Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google had not signed on.
The absence of these few companies is easily interpreted by outsiders as yet another divide between AI camps. And just now, Anthropic has formally released its new closed-source model Claude Opus 5, putting this contradiction right out in the open.
It doesn’t delve much into grand narratives; its selling points are quite pragmatic: performance approaching Fable 5, yet priced at only half of the latter—somewhat like a budget version that still delivers near-flagship service.
On benchmarks such as Frontier-Bench and GDPval-AA for programming and knowledge work, Opus 5 has already taken the top spot. The few areas it hasn’t claimed are concentrated in cybersecurity, where it still lags behind the more capable Mythos 5.
Rather than simply discussing Opus 5’s paper specs, what deserves more of our attention—beyond the official hype—is where it truly excels, and whether this “half-price flagship” comes with any hidden costs.
