Last week I refactored a piece of auth middleware. The requirements ran through my head three times, but by the time they hit the input box, they had shrunk to one dry line. When my hands started aching from typing, I remembered Claude Code already supports voice input.

I tried it. There’s no going back.

One command to turn it on

Bottom line first: you don’t install anything. In the CLI, type one command.

# Type this directly in a Claude Code session
/voice
# Output: Voice mode enabled (hold). Hold space to record.

The first time you enable it, it runs a microphone check. On macOS, you’ll get the system mic permission prompt—just allow it. The enabled state persists across sessions, so you only set it once. You can also persist it in config:
