Last week I was rushing a feature request. I’d typed half a screen of prompt in Claude Code when my fingers habitually hit Ctrl+S.
It should have saved. Instead, the text in the input box vanished.
I stared at the screen for five seconds, thinking, “Oh no, did that prompt just get swallowed?” Later I found out that Claude Code binds Ctrl+S by default to “stash the current input,” called chat:stash. Nothing was lost, but the action completely clashed with my muscle memory.
What made it more awkward: the other defaults, like Enter to submit, Esc to cancel, and Shift+Tab to switch permission modes, are all fine, but everyone comes from a different editor. Some are Vim people, some can’t live without VS Code, and some, like me, have spent too many years inside tmux.
So I went digging into Claude Code’s keybinding configuration. After a night of tinkering, all I can say is: this feature is buried a bit deep, but it’s absolutely worth changing.
