Last Wednesday night, I had Claude Code running a migration script. I stepped out to pour a glass of water, came back, and a blinding line was sitting on the screen: API Error: 529. First thought: I’m done. Did I break the config last night?
Ten minutes of thrashing later, I realized: nothing was wrong. The servers were just packed.
After that I went through the official error dictionary—hundreds of thousands of characters—start to finish. Most of the red text is not worth panicking over. A few of them have one-line fixes. This post collects the 10 you hit most often so next time you can match the error and stop blindly reinstalling.
First, get this straight: before it shows an error, it already retried 10 times
A lot of people don’t know Claude Code does not throw on the first failure. Timeouts, disconnects, 529s, and other transient faults are retried up to 10 times with exponential backoff. That spinning Retrying in 8s · attempt 3/10 is the retry loop.
So when the red text actually appears, all 10 attempts are gone. Don’t smash Enter and resend. Read what the error actually says.
