Is OpenAI coming for Google Translate’s crown?
Yesterday, OpenAI quietly launched a standalone translation feature on the ChatGPT web interface—ChatGPT Translate. At first glance, it looks quite similar to traditional translation tools like Google Translate. What may truly distinguish the two is the interactive and personalized adjustment capabilities that ChatGPT Translate offers after translation.
After its launch, I immediately conducted a comparative test between ChatGPT Translate and traditional translation tools like Google Translate.
Currently, ChatGPT Translate supports translation between over 50 languages, with three input modalities: text, voice, and image. However, in our hands-on experience, the PC web version doesn’t yet support multimodal input, while the mobile web version only supports text and voice.
After translation, users can also make modification requests for the translated content in the same interface or ask about specific details. After making these requests, users are redirected directly to the main ChatGPT site.
From a translation quality perspective, ChatGPT Translate actually hasn’t opened up much of a gap with Google Translate. The “machine translation” flavor may be slightly weaker, but it’s still noticeably present. Compared to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Translate has a faster translation speed but lower quality, possibly using a different model.
