The day has finally come.

Yesterday, an announcement from OpenAI caused quite a stir: they plan to add advertisements to ChatGPT.

Netizens felt hurt by this news. Some pointed out that one important reason people currently use large language models is to avoid ads and better query information—so what’s the point of ChatGPT adding ads back in?

Others believe that adding advertisements indicates OpenAI is currently under significant revenue pressure.

Pedro Domingos, Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and renowned AI scholar, quipped: “OpenAI has finally achieved AGI, though this AGI isn’t that AGI—it’s Ad-Generated Income.”

OpenAI’s announcement stated that ad testing will launch first in the United States within the coming weeks, with ads visible to free-tier users as well as users of a new paid tier—ChatGPT Go.
