Claude Code banned OpenCode, and immediately after, Codex announced support for OpenCode.
Starting January 9th, many users reported that OpenCode suddenly crashed—projects were cut off mid-development, and some accounts were banned.
Actually, this thing has been around for a while. It has built-in LSP support, free vendor binding, and some free models available. The features are nothing special—it’s just a copycat of Claude Code, working more or less the same way without many distinctive features. I have no idea why it suddenly became so popular.
But after the hype came the thunder.
If you actually take a careful look at the usage terms, you’ll find that most clients explicitly prohibit third-party use. Copilot and Google are no exceptions—after all, no one wants their customers doing work for someone else’s benefit, and it’s easy for vendors to detect this.
