This is Google's recently fully launched URL Context feature in the Gemini API (launched in Google AI Studio on May 28), which enables Gemini models to access and process content from URLs, including webpages, PDFs, and images.

Google Product Manager Logan Kilpatrick says this is his favorite Gemini API tool and recommends everyone set this tool as a default "no-brainer option."

So the soul-searching question: What's the essential difference between this and throwing links into AI chat boxes like I usually do? It feels like I've been doing this all along.

The difference lies in processing depth and working methodology. When you usually throw links, AI typically "sees" the webpage through a generic browsing tool or search engine plugin, and the AI likely only reads summaries or partial text from the webpage.
